What is website SEO? The service, the process and realistic timelines
What website SEO means and what you pay an agency for. How the work unfolds month by month, when results appear and when SEO is not worthwhile.
What is website SEO? The short answer
SEO means working to make your business appear on Google when someone searches for what you sell, without paying for each click. It is an ongoing service billed monthly, not a one-off website fix.
A client often calls with: “A friend said I need SEO, but I do not know what I am actually buying.” The honest answer: you buy a specialist’s time spent moving your website higher for specific search terms each month. You do not buy a place on Google. Organic positions cannot be bought.
Three things to know before signing anything:
- Results arrive slowly. Rankings for the easiest terms can move sooner, but measurable traffic growth takes 3-6 months and stable rankings a year.
- This is subscription work. A minimum of 3 months; realistically, plan for a year.
- Nobody can guarantee rankings. Anyone who does is lying or targeting terms nobody searches for.
Below, I explain what actually happens month by month, how long it takes, who benefits and who I advise against it.
Read onPozycjonowanie and SEO: are they the same?
Yes. In Polish practice, these terms mean the same thing. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) names the discipline: techniques for optimising a website for search engines. “Pozycjonowanie” is the Polish name for the agency service that applies those techniques.
An agency saying “we do SEO” and one saying “we do pozycjonowanie” sell exactly the same scope of work. What matters is what the contract lists, not the word on the invoice.
This article describes the service from the client’s perspective: process, timelines and responsibilities. If you want to understand the craft itself, including technical, on-page, off-page and content SEO, tools and metrics, that is a separate topic covered in what is SEO.
What working together looks like month by month
SEO has a poor reputation because many agencies do not show what happens between invoices. Here is how we work.
The work schedule for the first six months
Stage
What happens
Website audit, competitor analysis, keyword map. We establish which terms are worth targeting and their search volumes. We connect Analytics and Search Console and measure the starting point.
Technical fixes and rewriting key pages: titles, headings, service copy. This is usually where issues such as a website taking 6 seconds to load or four pages sharing a title come to light.
New content targeting the keyword map, missing service pages, initial links from external websites. The first keywords enter the top 10.
Improving what shows promise and dropping terms that fail to deliver. The report shows traffic growth and the first enquiries from Google.
Once a month, you receive a report and an email listing what we have done. Not 40 slides of charts: a task list, keyword positions and visit numbers. If something is not working, we say so directly and explain what we propose to change.
After the first six months, the work does not disappear; its nature changes. There are fewer repairs and more content and links. Competitors keep working too, so stopping after a year usually means a slow decline in rankings.
How long before results appear?
The most common disappointment comes from mismatched expectations. The client expects calls in month two, but the realistic schedule is different:
- Weeks 4-8 - Google notices the changes. Terms buried far down move to the second and third results pages. Traffic is not visible yet.
- Months 3-6 - the first keywords reach the top 10, traffic grows noticeably and the first enquiries from organic visits arrive.
- Months 6-12 - harder keywords reach leading positions, traffic stabilises and SEO starts paying for itself.
The pace depends on domain age (a new website starts from zero), technical condition, industry competition and how much content is produced. A furniture store competing for “furniture Warsaw” has a very different journey from a plumber targeting “plumber Białystok”.
Remember one thing: SEO accumulates. Content written in month three still works for you in month twenty. Paid advertising stops the day you switch off the budget.
How to tell whether SEO is working
An agency can show you attractive charts built on nothing. Watch four figures, in this order:
- Enquiries from organic traffic - calls, forms, messages. This is the only metric that pays the bills.
- Organic traffic in Analytics - how many people visit from Google’s unpaid results. Look for month-to-month growth, not day-to-day changes.
- Number of keywords in the top 10 and top 3 - not one selected keyword’s position, but the whole set.
- Impressions and clicks in Search Console - data directly from Google, without intermediaries. You should have access to that dashboard, not just the agency.
Good to know: create Analytics and Search Console under your own Google account and grant the agency access. When changing providers, you keep the data history instead of starting from zero.
Warning signs: a report without enquiry numbers; boasting about rankings for phrases such as “cheap reliable renovation services Podlaskie”; no Search Console access; a “top 3 in a month” guarantee. The last one happens more often than it should.
If organic traffic is flat after six months, the issue is not patience. It is a sign that something in the relationship is not working.
When SEO is a waste of money
We do not sell it to everyone, and I do not recommend it to everyone. Skip SEO if:
- You need customers now. Opening a venue in three weeks? Google Ads or Meta Ads can bring traffic from tomorrow. SEO cannot.
- You are running a one-off promotion. An event, clearance sale or one-month seasonal campaign calls for paid advertising, not a year-long programme.
- Nobody searches for your product. If customers do not know something exists, they will not search for it on Google. You need to build the category first, which is a different task.
- Your margin cannot cover the cost. With PLN 40 profit per customer and a PLN 1,500 monthly subscription, you need 38 new customers just to break even. Calculate this before starting.
- You cannot budget for six months. Paying for three months and cancelling wastes money. Results start appearing just when most people give up.
Calculate before starting: divide the monthly subscription by profit per customer. The result is how many customers SEO must bring each month just to break even.
Honestly, with some enquiries we tell the client their money would be better spent on paid campaigns or a proper website, because the current one does not sell regardless of rankings. It is a shorter conversation, but means less disappointment in month six.
What SEO requires from you
This is not a service you buy and forget. Your involvement in month one sets the pace for everything that follows.
- Access. Website admin, hosting, Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Business Profile. If the previous agency controls them, recovering access can take two weeks and delay the start by that much.
- Permission for website changes. We will rewrite copy, change headings and sometimes the menu layout. Without approval, all that remains is theory.
- Industry knowledge. We write the content, but you know what customers ask on the phone and how your service differs from competitors. An hour’s conversation provides material for several articles.
- One decision-maker. If a text circulates among three people for three weeks, publication stalls while the month passes.
- Patience backed by numbers. Not blind patience: you get a monthly report and can ask about every item.
The rest is our responsibility: analysis, technical work, content, links, monitoring and reporting.
Local or nationwide SEO?
These are two different services under one name, and the most common area where businesses waste budget.
Local SEO targets city-based keywords (“electrician Białystok”) and Google Maps. Its foundations are Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business details in directories and pages for specific districts or nearby towns. Competition is narrower, so results arrive sooner. In Białystok, many service terms can reach the top 10 within 3-4 months. For a business serving customers within 50 km, this is the only sensible option. Google Business Profile optimisation does much of the work here, because the map appears above organic listings in local results.
Nationwide SEO competes for terms without a location (“alarm systems”, “online driving course”). There are more searches, but also competitors with budgets and years of work behind them. It needs more content, more links and more time, realistically measured in years rather than months. It makes sense if you sell across Poland or ship products by courier.
There is no reason for a local service business to pay for a nationwide package. Conversely, an online store delivering nationwide gains little from keywords mentioning just one city. We break down the costs of each option in how much SEO costs, and monthly rates are on the agency pricing page.
Before signing an SEO contract
Five questions worth asking any agency, including ours:
- Which keywords will you target, and what are their search volumes? Get the list with volumes before starting. Without it, you are buying blind.
- What exactly do you do each month? How many texts and links, and what technical fixes? “SEO activities” is not enough of an answer.
- Who owns access and accounts? Analytics, Search Console and the business profile must be yours. Always.
- What does the report look like? Ask for an anonymised example from another client. You will see whether it contains numbers or just narrative.
- What happens after the contract ends? Content and website improvements stay. Links from rented sites may not. Ask which is which.
SEO is neither magic nor a quick win. It is systematic work that, after a year, brings traffic independently of an advertising budget. That is why it pays for businesses thinking about the coming years rather than next week.
To check whether it makes sense for you, start with our website SEO service, look at pricing and read how much SEO costs. To understand the craft itself, read what is SEO.
Summary: what to remember
You buy SEO as monthly work, not a one-off website fix. The Polish term “pozycjonowanie” describes the same service, so compare contractual scope rather than the word on the invoice. The schedule is predictable: traffic moves after 3-6 months and stable rankings come after a year. You judge the direction by enquiry numbers and the set of keywords in the top 10, not one chosen term. Skip it if you need customers immediately, nobody searches for your product or your margins cannot support the subscription. Paid advertising works faster in those cases. If you start, remember that the pace also depends on you: without access, decisions and industry knowledge, a month’s work is lost.
FAQ: common questions about SEO services
Six questions that come up in every first conversation about this service. The answers focus on specifics; the sections above provide the broader context.
What is website SEO?
SEO is ongoing work to help your website appear high in Google’s unpaid results for the terms your customers search for. It includes keyword selection, technical website improvements, content writing and earning links from other websites. It is a monthly subscription service, not a one-off action.
How does the Polish term pozycjonowanie differ from SEO?
In practice, they describe the same work. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) names the discipline and its techniques, while pozycjonowanie is the Polish name for the service you buy from an agency. Agencies saying “we do SEO” or “we do pozycjonowanie” sell the same thing. The scope in the contract matters, not the name.
How long does SEO take to start working?
Measurable traffic growth appears after 3-6 months, with stable rankings for harder keywords after a year of work. The easiest long-tail keywords usually move earlier, after a few weeks. That indicates the direction is right, but is not yet the result. A new domain with no history needs more time than a website established for several years. That is why SEO contracts run for at least 3 months.
When does SEO not make sense?
It does not make sense if you need customers this week, sell something nobody searches for on Google, make less profit from one customer than the monthly service costs, or cannot budget for at least six months of work. Paid campaigns will work faster in these situations.
What does an agency need from me for SEO?
Access to your website, Google Analytics, Search Console and Google Business Profile; permission to make website changes; industry knowledge for content; and one decision-maker on your side. Without access and approval for changes, work stalls and a month of the subscription is wasted.
How does local SEO differ from nationwide SEO?
Local SEO targets keywords containing a city name and Google Maps. It relies heavily on Google Business Profile and reviews, and results arrive sooner because competition is narrower. Nationwide SEO competes for keywords without a location, requires more content and links, costs more and takes longer.
One sentence to remember: SEO is monthly work that starts paying off only after several months, and only when access, decisions and content on your side do not stall. Have a question not answered here? Email biuro@digidraft.pl. We reply within 24 business hours.
