What does a marketing agency do?
What a marketing agency does: five areas of work, the process from brief to launch, actual prices and a local campaign example with results.
Introduction
You are looking for marketing help, and every other search result calls itself a “marketing agency”. One designs logos, another runs Google campaigns, and a third offers “everything for business”. It is hard to tell what you will actually get for your money.
This article explains the subject from the client’s perspective. I show how a marketing agency differs from an advertising agency, the five areas its work rests on, the process from brief to launch, and when outsourcing marketing makes sense.
At the end, you will find actual figures from our price list and a sports club example showing what well-run local marketing can achieve on a modest budget.
I am writing from the perspective of DigiDraft, an agency in Białystok that designs, codes and implements its own work. The examples come from our experience, but the principles apply to working with any agency.
What does “marketing agency” actually mean?
A marketing agency is a company that plans and manages promotion for other businesses, from strategy and creative work to measuring results. In practice, that means one team with different responsibilities: strategist, copywriter, designer, Google and Meta campaign specialist, sometimes a developer and video editor.
The key word is “plans”. A marketing agency does not begin with “let’s make an ad”. It asks who your customer is, where to find them, how much you can pay for one enquiry and how you will know things are working. Those answers determine whether you need a campaign, SEO, a new website, or all three together.
Example: opening a burger restaurant
Suppose you are opening a burger restaurant. The product is good, but nobody knows about it yet. An agency breaks that launch into specific tasks:
- Logo and visual identity - the sign, menu, packaging and Instagram profile look like one brand rather than five different companies.
- A website with the menu and directions - optimised for phrases such as “burgery Białystok” (burgers in Białystok), because that is exactly how customers search.
- Google Business Profile - hours, photos and reviews; for a restaurant, this is often the most important channel of all.
- Google and Meta Ads for opening day - advertising to people within a few kilometres, with spending under control.
- A social media plan - photos, Reels and posts for the first few weeks, instead of a chaotic promise to “post something”.
A freelancer can do each task separately. An agency’s value is in combining them into one plan with one budget and taking responsibility for the overall result rather than one individual piece.
How does a marketing agency differ from an advertising agency?
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, and the boundary does blur. The difference is responsibility: an advertising agency delivers campaigns, while a marketing agency also takes responsibility for the strategy connecting them.
Marketing agency
- Scope - strategy, creative work, delivery and performance analysis in one place.
- Time horizon - building the brand and its market position, with results measured over months and years.
- Channels - SEO, paid campaigns, social media, content and branding, chosen to fit the goal.
- Role - an advisory partner that also tells you what not to do and why.
- Drawback - a higher entry cost; a full service costs more than a single campaign.
Advertising agency
- Scope - delivering campaigns to the client’s specifications.
- Time horizon - quick results during the campaign.
- Channels - selected media, usually paid advertising and creative work.
- Role - a contractor that does what you commission well.
- Drawback - strategy remains your responsibility; without one, even a good campaign serves a weak plan.
What that means in practice
If you have a strategy, materials and metrics, an advertising agency can run the campaign, and that is enough. If you are still figuring out what to promote and where, you need a marketing partner, not just an advertising contractor.
Five areas of a marketing agency’s work
Services vary between agencies, but good marketing support rests on five areas:
- Marketing strategy - market, competitor and audience analysis before you spend your first zloty on promotion. Strategy establishes the objective: which keywords, channels, budget and metrics.
- SEO and content marketing - search engine optimisation, technical improvements and content that answers customer questions. Google traffic takes months to build but stays for the long term.
- Advertising campaigns - Google Ads and Meta Ads can bring results from the first few days, with full budget control. This is the fastest way to act, provided someone watches cost per conversion rather than impressions.
- Social media - profile management, content and a community around the brand. This is where customers check whether a business is active before messaging or calling.
- Branding and creative work - logo, identity, graphics and website. A consistent image means the other activities all build the same brand.
Few companies need all five at once. A sensible agency starts with one or two areas likely to make the greatest difference, and only expands the scope once the initial work is paying off.
How projects take shape: a five-step process
From the outside, creative work can look chaotic. In practice, delivering on time requires a process. Every project we handle, from logo to campaign, goes through the same stages:
- Brief - we gather requirements: who you are, whom you address, what you want to achieve and what you definitely do not want. The more specific the brief, the fewer revision rounds later.
- Concepts - the brief becomes initial directions: sketches, moodboards and headlines. Most ideas are discarded here, which is good: this is the cheapest point at which to make mistakes.
- Prototype - the chosen direction becomes a working version: a website mock-up, a logo shown in real applications, or a campaign outline with ad copy.
- Revisions - we present the project, collect feedback and refine it. Agreeing the number of revision rounds in advance keeps time and budget under control.
- Launch - the website goes on the server, the campaign starts, and materials go to print. From then on, data matters: what works stays; what does not is removed.
Good to know: creativity does not disappear in this process; it gets a framework. An idea that does not move you towards the brief’s goal is only decoration.
SEO: how an agency builds Google visibility
The top Google results take most clicks. Businesses further down are practically invisible to searchers, which is why SEO is a regular part of marketing agency work, not an optional extra for a pretty website.
Here is where the time goes in SEO:
- SEO audit - a technical review of the website: speed, errors, structure and content. We start every SEO engagement with an SEO audit, because a useful plan needs a diagnosis.
- Keyword selection - we check what your customers actually search for and how strong the competition is. Fighting for a phrase nobody enters wastes the budget.
- Content optimisation - titles, headings and copy that answer people’s questions and make sense to a search engine. The two are compatible.
- Link building - links from valuable websites that build your domain’s authority in Google’s eyes.
- Monitoring and reporting - each month, you see rankings, traffic and enquiries. SEO is a process: initial results usually arrive after 3-6 months, and stable rankings after a year.
The result of well-run SEO is straightforward: customers who find you themselves, without a charge for every click.
When is it worth outsourcing marketing to an agency?
Working with an agency is not reserved for large companies. Smaller businesses often gain the most, especially where nobody has the time or skills to run marketing properly. If you recognise yourself in at least three points below, it is a good time:
- Your website belongs to the previous decade - it works poorly on phones, loads slowly and does not appear in Google.
- The product is good, but nobody knows it - you lack visibility and strategy, not quality.
- You handle social media after hours - posts are irregular, reach is flat, and you do not have time for it anyway.
- Ads burn through the budget - campaigns get clicks but no enquiries. The setup is usually the problem, not the channel.
- Competitors are pulling ahead and you do not know how - market analysis shows what they do better and where your opportunity lies.
- You want to scale online sales - you need a plan and people, not more guesswork.
- You are tired of marketing as a lottery - you want to know what works, what it costs and what you get from it.
Outsourced marketing is not a fixed expense paid “because you should”. It is a tool that should earn its keep. Two sections below, I show what that looks like in numbers.
Case study: Berserkers Team Rzeszów
Berserkers Team Rzeszów is a martial arts club that came to us with a specific goal: more enquiries about memberships and free training sessions, better visibility in the city, and an image that felt like a brand rather than a neighbourhood gym.
What we did
- Refreshed the identity - logo, colours and typography built around a strong, athletic character. Consistent from the sign to social media.
- A one-page website - one message, a clear CTA and a sign-up form for free training. Fast and mobile-friendly, because people book training on their phones.
- Local SEO - Google Business Profile optimisation for the phrases prospective members actually use to find a club.
- Meta Ads campaigns - several campaigns on modest budgets, focused on membership and training enquiries rather than likes.
Results in local Google search
- 1st place for “boks Rzeszów” (boxing in Rzeszów)
- 1st place for “sztuki walki Rzeszów” (martial arts in Rzeszów)
- 3rd place for “MMA Rzeszów”
- plus hundreds of calls and enquiries about free training through the form and campaigns
Budgets on this project were modest. The results came from combining identity, a fast website and local SEO into one plan, rather than from the scale of spending. You can find similar branding, website and campaign projects in our portfolio.
How much does working with a marketing agency cost?
Actual figures instead of “it depends”. Below are rates from our price list for the four most commonly commissioned areas. Prices exclude VAT; you pay the advertising budget, meaning money spent in Google and Meta, separately and directly to the platforms.

Area of work
Listed cost
What to expect
PLN 1,500-3,800 / month (local to e-commerce), minimum 3 months
Initial results after 3-6 months, stable rankings after a year; traffic that lasts
PLN 1,500 setup + PLN 1,500 / month for one ecosystem; both: PLN 2,500 + PLN 2,500 / month
Traffic and enquiries from the first few days, full control of spending
Regular communication, growing reach and a community around the brand
Logo from PLN 650, identity PLN 2,600-4,600 (one-off)
A consistent image supporting every other activity
How to read these figures
The most expensive option is not always the right one. Berserkers needed only modest budgets because the work served one goal: training enquiries. The reverse is also true: a PLN 5,000 monthly campaign can burn through its budget in a week if it sends people to a slow, confusing website. We break down website costs in our article on how much a website costs.
If you need several areas at once, price a regular marketing support package instead of three separate contracts: one team, one budget and one monthly report.
Summary: what to remember
- A marketing agency takes responsibility for strategy and results, not just producing ads. That is the main difference from an advertising agency.
- Its work rests on five areas: strategy, SEO and content, paid campaigns, social media and branding. You rarely need all of them at once.
- Every project follows the same process: brief, concepts, prototype, revisions and launch. This is about controlling time and budget, not bureaucracy.
- A good time to hire an agency is when after-hours marketing is no longer enough or ads consume the budget without results.
- Costs can be calculated: from PLN 600 per month for social media to PLN 3,800 for e-commerce SEO. All rates are in the price list.

FAQ: common questions about marketing agencies
Five questions that come up most often in a first conversation: agency differences, money, when to start and the first step. The answers get straight to the point; the sections above give the wider context.
How does a marketing agency differ from an advertising agency?
An advertising agency delivers campaigns to the client’s specifications. A marketing agency also owns the strategy: it selects channels, budgets and metrics, then accounts for the overall results. If you do not have your own marketing strategy, you need a marketing partner, not just a campaign contractor.
How much does working with a marketing agency cost?
It depends on the scope. Social media management costs PLN 600-1,900 per month, SEO PLN 1,500-3,800 per month, Google or Meta Ads PLN 1,500 for setup plus PLN 1,500 per month for one ecosystem, and logo design starts at PLN 650. Prices exclude VAT. You pay the advertising budget separately, directly to the platforms.
When is it worth outsourcing marketing to an agency?
When doing it yourself stops being enough: the website generates no enquiries, social media gets irregular attention after hours, and ads get clicks without results. An agency also makes sense when scaling, if you need a measured plan and a team rather than more guesswork.
What does a marketing agency do as part of SEO?
A technical website audit, keyword selection based on search data, content optimisation, link building and a monthly report on rankings and traffic. The first SEO results usually appear after 3-6 months, with stable rankings after about a year.
How should you start working with a marketing agency?
With a diagnosis, not a contract for everything at once. SEO work starts with an audit (PLN 800-3,200 depending on scope); other services begin with a brief and a plan with metrics. This makes it clear from month one what is being done and how you will recognise results.
If you remember one thing, make it this: a marketing agency is responsible for strategy and results, not just ads. Scope is chosen around one goal, costs can be calculated before starting, and a sensible relationship begins with a diagnosis rather than a contract for everything at once.
