How do you plan an effective advertising campaign?

Choose your channel, budget and profitability threshold, build a landing page, select creative formats and avoid mistakes that waste the first week’s budget.

Introduction

If you think someone automatically becomes your customer after clicking an ad, you are mistaken. A click matters. It matters a lot. But it is only the start of the journey from an anonymous visitor to a satisfied customer.

Experience tells me that many people expect immediate success when launching a campaign: click, purchase, money in the bank. Reality is different. You need a good plan, precise action and a strategy that connects the ad, landing page and purchase journey into a working system.

If you want to do that properly, step by step, with practical advice rather than padding, you are in the right place.

This article covers the whole advertising campaign process: from the first click to acquiring the customer. Without agency jargon.

What should you know before launching an ad?

Before clicking “Publish” in Ads Manager, stop and ask yourself some uncomfortable questions. Effective online advertising is not a guessing game. It is not a cat post on Facebook. It is a business tool that will either bring customers or burn through your budget.

Start with the foundations: even the best agency cannot replace them

Before launching a campaign, you must know:

  • Who is your customer? Not “everyone” or “women aged 20-60”. Be specific: a name, interests, a problem and motivation. The better you know the audience, the better your Facebook or YouTube advertising will be.
  • What is your goal? More sales? Leads? Brand building? “More clicks” is not enough. Without a clear goal, effectiveness cannot be measured.
  • What resources do you have? Your own photos, video and landing page, or do you need support from start to finish? This determines the scope and budget.
  • What stage is your product or service at? For a new offer, visual or video advertising, such as YouTube, may work better than a traditional text message. Each stage needs a different strategy.

Remember:

Online advertising does not work simply because it exists. It works as part of a thought-out strategy. Whether you run it yourself or hire an agency, without preparation you can only hope for a miracle. We prefer to rely on data.

Next, I will show you which advertising channels are available and which best fits your business. Being everywhere is not always effective.

Facebook Ads, YouTube or Google Ads: which channel should you choose?

Before putting money into the first available online ad, ask: “Where do your customers actually spend time?” Choosing the channel is half the battle. Here is a quick comparison of three popular platforms, including their benefits and limitations.

We manage all three and usually launch Google Ads campaigns first: they reveal most quickly whether the offer stands up.

Advertising channels compared

Channel

When does it fit?

Strengths

Weaknesses

Facebook / Instagram Ads
B2C, community building, remarketing

Precise targeting, carousels, stories, video ads, A/B testing

Seasonal CPM increases; needs a constant supply of content

Google Ads (Search & Display)
Customers searching now, with purchase intent

Ads triggered by searches (high CTR), flexible CPC budget, Display for visual advertising

Costlier clicks in competitive industries; less scope for storytelling

YouTube Ads
Brands with strong stories, education, B2C/B2B

Very broad reach, longer viewer contact, Google remarketing

Video production can be expensive; users often skip ads

TikTok is deliberately absent: TikTok ads follow a different logic. Native vertical content matters, rather than creative moved over from Facebook.

How do you choose the right channel?

  1. Define the campaign goal: sales, leads or awareness?
  2. Check where the customer makes a decision:
    • Searching Google? Choose Search.
    • Scrolling and needing an emotional prompt? Facebook advertising.
    • Educating people or establishing expertise? YouTube advertising.
  3. Assess budget and resources: video production is not the same as a static graphic.
  4. Test, measure and optimise: no agency can get everything right first time without data.

The key rule: The best channel is the one that delivers your KPI, not the one you like most.

Next are seven steps that turn this theory into a working campaign, from technical setup to the first conversions.

Seven steps to an effective advertising campaign

You know where you want to advertise and why. Now for the practical work. An effective campaign is a designed process, not an accident. These are the seven steps I use in the agency when we want online advertising to produce results.

  1. Start with the goal. If you do not know where you are going, no campaign can take you there. Set a clear, measurable goal: 50 leads in 30 days, 1,000 website visits from Facebook ads, or 20 webinar registrations. Otherwise, it is hard to judge whether the advertising works.
  2. Define your customer persona and understand their needs. “Women aged 25-60 in large cities” is not enough. Build a specific profile: their problems, what they seek and where they spend time online. The better you understand them, the more effective your advertising, whatever the channel.
  3. Prepare an offer that is hard to resist. A discount? A sample? A free training session? Whatever the industry, something must attract attention and encourage the click. A bland offer will not cut through today’s advertising noise.
  4. Create an ad that attracts attention and works. The headline must stop the scroll, the image or video must intrigue, and the copy must clearly explain the benefit. Add a strong call to action and make sure the ad matches its destination. Consistency between creative and landing page is fundamental.
  5. Set up the campaign properly. In Ads Manager or Google Ads, everything must be logical and clear, from campaign structure to ad set names. Check the Facebook pixel, conversion tags and GA4 implementation. Without them, you cannot measure results.
  6. Plan the budget and schedule. Do not put all the money behind one creative. Start with A/B tests, for example PLN 20-30 daily per ad group. See what works before scaling. Small tests mean large savings.
  7. Optimise, analyse and improve. Launch is only halfway. Review statistics regularly: CTR, CPC and CPA. Turn off weaker variants and retain winners. Data, not hunches, should guide decisions.

Remember: The most expensive ad is the one whose results you cannot measure. Next we break down the budget: what a customer really costs and how to make money work instead of disappear.

Campaign budget: what does online advertising cost, and is it profitable?

You have a goal, know the audience and have prepared the offer. Now comes the question every agency hears: “How much will it cost?”

The answer, frustratingly, is “it depends”. It really does. But let us break it down properly.

What affects campaign costs?

  • Channel: Facebook can be cheaper to start than Google Ads but needs better creative. YouTube requires video, which often brings higher production costs.
  • Industry: a click for “good café nearby” costs less than one for “business mortgage”.
  • Duration: a seven-day campaign differs from one building awareness over months.
  • Link building: we acquire valuable links to your website. They act like votes of confidence in Google’s eyes: the more, the better.
  • Landing page quality: even the best online ad cannot sell if the destination looks like a relic from 2007.

Example starting budgets

Campaign type

Starting budget

What does it cover?

Facebook ads (leads/sales)
from PLN 900 / month

PLN 30 daily for one ad set, an A/B test and basic retargeting

Google Ads (Search)
from PLN 1,500 / month

Local or niche keyword campaign with data for optimisation

YouTube advertising (video)
from PLN 1,000-2,000 / month
Reach, remarketing and basic video editing

These budgets go to the platforms, not the agency. We explain the thresholds and what happens below them in Facebook advertising costs and Google Ads costs.

What else belongs in the budget?

  • Creative production: graphics, video and copy
  • Campaign management by a specialist or agency
  • Tools, such as automation and conversion analysis systems

Important points

  • A larger budget does not always mean better results.
  • No strategy means wasted money, even if it is only PLN 300.
  • Effective online advertising combines well-spent money, a good idea and good execution.

Next we look at the destination of your ad: the landing page. It determines whether the click becomes a conversion.

How to create a landing page that sells

You know the feeling: you click a promising ad and arrive on a page that looks like an IT school assignment from 2006.

This is where the magic, or the disaster, happens. The landing page determines whether the customer stays and does what you need: leaves their details, signs up for a webinar, buys a product or orders a service.

What is a landing page, and how does it differ from a homepage?

A landing page is not an ordinary website. It is a sales page with one task: conversion, rather than telling the entire brand story. There is no menu or endless navigation. There is a specific message, an offer and a button.

What does an effective landing page need?

  1. A headline that immediately explains the offer: clear, simple and specific, with no padding. You have three seconds before the visitor goes back.
  2. A clearly visible call to action: “Request a free quote”, “Book a training session” or “Download the PDF”. Whatever the action, it must be obvious and unambiguous.
  3. Consistency with the ad: if the Facebook ad promises a free e-book but the page offers an expert webinar, you have just lost a potential customer. They must be the same offer.
  4. Social proof and trust: reviews, figures, client logos and project photos, anything that helps the visitor trust you and continue.
  5. Speed and mobile usability: 70-80% of advertising traffic comes from mobile. If the page fails to load on a phone, the campaign is over.

Remember: A good ad with a bad landing page is like inviting someone on a date to a restaurant that does not exist.

Which ad format should you choose: visual, video or text?

Ad format has a major effect on campaign performance. Not every format fits every goal and audience. Know when to use graphics, when to use video and when focused text is the right choice.

Ad formats: advantages and disadvantages

  • Requires precise keyword selection
  • Lacks the impact of imagery or movement

A good campaign does not always rely on one format

Combining formats, testing, optimising and adapting to user behaviour produces the best results. If you lack video material, our video ad production covers scripting, shooting and editing in three aspect ratios: 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9.

Next, we cover the most common campaign mistakes and how to avoid them. Even a great format cannot rescue broken settings.

Common advertising campaign mistakes and how to avoid them

You may have a great product, excellent graphics and an even better budget. But one of these mistakes can make your campaign fail or actively put potential customers off.

These are the mistakes we see most often when clients come to an agency after “something did not work”. Each comes with a practical prevention tip.

Mistake 1. No clear campaign goal

An ad “for likes”? Why? Every campaign needs a specific, measurable goal: leads, sales or event registrations. Without one, you do not know what to measure or expect.

How to avoid it: Set the KPI before creating the ad. Replace “more website visitors” with “300 visits with CTR > 3% in seven days”.

Mistake 2. An overly broad audience

Targeting “everyone aged 18-65 in Poland” is not a strategy; it wastes budget. Even the best Facebook ad cannot hit the target if you aim at an undefined crowd.

How to avoid it: Create personas. Test small, well-chosen groups, then scale what works.

Mistake 3. The ad and landing page do not match

The ad says “Get a free e-book”; the page says “Discover our services”. No consistency means no trust and no conversion.

How to avoid it: Make sure the ad copy, graphic and landing page carry the same message. This is one process, not three separate worlds.

Mistake 4. Video that is too long or starts too slowly

For YouTube advertising, the worst approach is to start telling the story after seven seconds. The viewer has already clicked “Skip”.

How to avoid it: Open strongly. The first three seconds decide the ad’s fate. Spark interest, intrigue the viewer or ask a question.

Mistake 5. No A/B testing

You do not know what works because you test nothing. Or you test everything at once and cannot tell what made the difference.

How to avoid it: Test one element at a time: headline, graphic or CTA. Small tests deliver large savings.

Mistake 6. No data or analysis

The ad works, but why? If it does not, where is the problem? Without data, you are working blind.

How to avoid it: Integrate analytics tools: Facebook pixel, GA4 and Tag Manager. Monitor CTR, CPC and CPA. Do not fear numbers; they tell the truth.

Mistake 7. Ignoring mobile devices

Most users click ads on a phone, yet you send them to a page that loads for eight seconds and does not work on a smartphone.

How to avoid it: Design mobile first. Test different devices and take care of loading speed.

The lesson: stop for a moment

A campaign is more than numbers, clicks and statistics. It is a set of decisions, conscious or otherwise, that determines the outcome. Before putting money into another ad set, pause.

Check that your goals are clear, the destination page works, the ad says what you intend, and the audience can understand why clicking is worthwhile.

The biggest campaign mistake is not a poor graphic or a badly chosen keyword. It is acting without a plan or reflection.

Summary: an effective campaign needs a plan, not magic

Building an effective campaign does not require luck. It requires a process, conscious decisions and continuous optimisation. This guide comes from practice, tests and many hours spent on real campaigns, including those with small budgets and big ambitions, rather than textbook theory.

What should you remember?

  • Advertising is more than format and graphics: it is a message for a specific person with a specific need.
  • Advertising without a goal makes no sense: if you do not know why you are running a campaign, do not expect it to succeed by itself.
  • An agency gives you access to a team of specialists, instead of finding everything yourself.
  • Test and analyse: data does not lie; intuition sometimes does.
  • The landing page must deliver: even the best ad is useless if the visitor is discouraged after clicking.
  • Choose the format for your audience, not yourself: your favourite channel is not always the best sales channel.

You do not need all the answers immediately. But you must know how to find them and where to avoid expensive mistakes.

Good advertising is no accident - it comes from a considered strategy and consistent action.

FAQ: common questions about campaign planning

Five questions recur at the first meeting before launch: goals, channels, budgets, clicks without sales and landing pages. Each is explained in the sections above.

Where should you start when planning an advertising campaign?

With four answers: exactly who your customer is, your measurable goal, the resources available and the stage your product has reached. A goal such as 50 leads in 30 days or 20 webinar registrations can be assessed; more clicks cannot. These decisions determine the channel, format and budget, not the other way round.

Which advertising channel should you choose: Google Ads, Facebook or YouTube?

Google Ads reaches people searching now with purchase intent. Facebook and Instagram work for B2C, remarketing and community building but require a regular supply of creative. YouTube provides broad reach and longer viewer contact, at the cost of video production. TikTok follows its own logic: native vertical content matters more than creative copied from Facebook.

What determines the cost of an advertising campaign?

The channel, because video production costs more than static graphics; the industry, because competitive niches have more expensive clicks; campaign duration; and landing page quality. Creative, campaign management and analytics tools add further costs. The budget paid to advertising platforms is separate from the agency management fee.

Why do people click an ad but not buy?

Usually because the ad and landing page do not match: the ad promises a free e-book, while the page describes company services. Other causes include an overly broad audience, a slow or broken mobile site and missing measurement that hides where people drop out. The ad copy, creative and landing page must communicate the same thing.

What must an advertising landing page contain?

A headline that explains the offer in seconds, one clear call to action, consistency with the ad, evidence through reviews, figures and completed projects, and a working mobile version, because phones account for 70-80% of advertising traffic. A landing page has one task: generate a conversion, not tell the entire brand story.

A campaign does not end at the click or begin with the creative. It starts with a measurable goal and ends on a page that delivers it. Have a question not covered here? Email biuro@digidraft.pl. We reply within 24 working hours.
